Arriving at Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is a spectacular experience. Earth Lodge lies sunken in a slope of the earth, making it a surrealistic point of entry to your Sabi Sands safari experience. Its earthly architecture makes clever use of texture, space and light. The lodge is clearly inspired by the surrounding African bushveld environment and you will notice that nature determines the pace of life here. A hidden entrance passage opens to an incredible view of the bush. Earth Lodge is a modern mix of gleaming tiles, recessed lighting and the warm tones of natural fibres. Luxurious African-style décor and the heavy “bunker” themed walls and ceilings create a completely unusual safari vibe: in some ways the property is futuristic and in others, a stone-age cave.

Earth Lodge provides a welcome break from more traditional safari lodges and camps throughout Africa. The outer worldly design features of Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge take you away from daily routine and lets you restore your senses and spirit. Just thirteen ultra luxurious suite (including the massive Amber suite) make up Earth Lodge, providing privacy for every traveller to this remote corner of the earth. Each of the suites features an indoor and outdoor shower, individually designed furniture, as well as a private plunge pool. The indoor-outdoor dining area overlooks a waterhole and the bushveld, the lodge has a library, underground wine cellar, Zen garden and Amani Spa.

We stayed four nights at the Earth Lodge in February 2010 and cannot speak more positively about the experience. What the Earth Lodge sets out to accomplish is not easy by any measure - it is remote and largely self-contained. There is limited opportunity to explore independently. On the surface, variety of experience is limited. The amenities are sparse albeit first-rate in every respect. All of these potential drawbacks are fully and completely overcome in every fashion by the experience itself. Every aspect of this place is first-rate. Although there are not many dining choices, the entire menu is of the highest quality and exciting in terms of creativity, preparation and presentation. It is difficult to imagine a better dining experience than Chef Ivan's cuisine at the Earth Lodge. Beyond the dining, the service is exceptional. The initial greeting is among the most welcoming experiences I have ever had. Service is provided in a manner that is professional yet personable and without pretension. A special mention must be made of the safari Rangers and Trackers, in our case, Joseph and Goodman, who made the game drives exciting, fun, educational and truly memorable. I cannot recommend the Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge more highly.

My wife and I went to Earth Lodge for three nights at the tail end of our honeymoon. With exceptionally high expectations due to the cost, this experience somehow surpassed our expectations. The service cannot be put on paper, as they always seem to be there to meet your needs. You really do feel like you are a true guest (only a handful of rooms). We were pleasantly surprised by the cuisine...it is 5-star, and we are foodies. The house wine is spectacular, so you don't need to buck up for the wine list (Pinotage is fabu). Our guide, Peitre, was incredibly professional and pleasant.
